“It’s been a busy morning already, Kesh.” The older lady states to the younger amidst the bustling of a hot kitchen. “I have your tray for The Lady right here and the other one right here, but I don’t have anyone to deliver it until the bread is finished. We’ve already nearly burnt one of the batches already, so we are watching them more carefully. It seems we’re having a problem with the ovens not heating evenly. I am going to have one of the men look it over after we are done the day’s baking which should be early afternoon.”
Kesh nods in understanding and pulls out the salient facts. The first is that if Selel and Nexxen’s breakfast is going to make it up to their room within the next half an hour, she was going to either have to grab a stable boy or bring it up herself. Looking at the two trays, she readjusts the plates, mugs, pitchers and silverware to a more balanced, but less artistic or formal layout of the trays. “That is alright, Mrs. Kender,” she says to the lead of kitchen staff. “I think I can take them both up if you can help me by putting them on my hands.”
The older lady shakes her head. “Ye must be in a powerful hurry to take them both up for that. I’ll have some rags and a bucket ready in case ye have need,” she smiles back. Picking up the heavier tray, Mrs. Kender lays it centered on Kesh’s out stretched hand. Seeing it fairly well balanced, she picks up the smaller tray and lays that on her other hand. “Ye be careful and if ye spill, we can whip up another batch in a bit.”
Kesh nods to her and says, “Seems like a busy morning all around.” Straightening her posture a bit to aid in the trays’ balance, she starts forward and says over her shoulder, “Thank you again Mrs. Kender for your help in this.”
“You just please make sure her Ladyship’s breakfast gets to her warm and if it doesn’t,” Mrs. Kender says, then pauses a little for effect while a twinkle appears in her eye. “Ye get that fire goblin of hers to heat up the metal cover gentle like for about two to three minutes, but no more than that!” the older lady exclaims. Kesh nods as she leaves the kitchen by the back stairs up.
Climbing the stairs to the second level and following the twisted path to the east guest room, she has the guard take Mistara’s breakfast from her and settle it down on a nearby hall table. “I just may have to have Dhar heat Mistara’s meal if I take too long here,” Kesh thinks, then thanks the guard for his help. Having the guard help her shift the tray to two hands, then open the door for her, Kesh looks in and enters to see Lord Nexxen holding a glass of last night’s wine while standing by the window. She enters and after two steps in, lowers to a slight curtsey while holding the tray in her hands. “Greetings, Lord Nexxen, I am Kesh. We met briefly yesterday when you,” glancing quickly at Selel on the bed, “and your wife came last night. I helped with her chiurgeonry last afternoon and need to check on her wounds this morning.” Settling the tray next to the other tray of last night, she notices that the food is hardly touched, but the fire still burns adequately in the fireplace. “If you have any questions I might answer, I would be happy to help as I check on your wife.” Kesh crosses over to the bed, starting her examination of Selel with her observations of her breathing, temperature, skin color and other tricks Mistara taught her over time. She knows once the basics are done, she will need to pull back the covers and examine the actual wounds, making mental notes of each wounds condition as she is sure that with her next stop being Mistara’s breakfast, she will quiz her to her sister’s fate.
